Best security camera system for a small business (2026)

By Rizwan Prasla. Updated October 10, 2026.
The short answerGet a wired Reolink PoE kit for most small businesses and convenience stores: one box records everything, there's no monthly fee, and it keeps recording when the internet drops. Pick Lorex for 8 to 16 cameras, UniFi Protect for several locations, Ring if you can't run cables, and Verkada if you run a chain.

You need a UniFi console to record, such as a Cloud Gateway or a UniFi NVR. It works best if you or a local installer can set up the network.

Skip it if you want a plug-in-and-go kit. Reolink is simpler.

Where to put the cameras

  • Front door, facing in: at head height, so every face is clear on the way in.
  • Register: above and behind the cashier, showing the customer, the counter and the cash drawer.
  • High-theft shelves: vape, tobacco, beer cooler and anything small and expensive.
  • Stock room and back door: where deliveries come in and staff come and go.
  • Office or safe: one camera on the safe is cheap insurance.
  • Parking lot or gas pumps: outdoor 4K cameras, for plates and drive-offs.

Storage: buy a bigger drive than you think

4K video fills drives fast. In Security.org's Lorex test, a 1 TB drive held about 20 days of nonstop 4K from a single camera. Eight cameras on that drive would fill it in under 3 days. For 30 days of history, get a 4 TB or larger drive, set cameras to record on motion, or record lower resolution on cameras that don't need 4K.

Rules to follow

  • Post a sign that video recording is in use. It also deters theft.
  • No cameras in restrooms or changing areas. Ever.
  • Audio: some states require everyone's consent to record a conversation. Keep audio off unless you've checked your state's law.
  • Skip Hikvision and Dahua for new systems. The FCC stopped approving their new equipment in 2022.
  • Change the default password on the recorder and turn on two-factor login in the app.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best security camera system for a small business?

For most small businesses, a wired Reolink PoE kit is the best value: it includes the recorder, hard drive and cameras, and needs no monthly fee. Choose Lorex for bigger spaces with 8 to 16 cameras, UniFi Protect for several locations, Ring if you can't run cables, and Verkada for chains that want cloud management.

Do business security cameras need a monthly fee?

Not always. Systems that record to a recorder on site, such as Reolink, Lorex and UniFi Protect, work without a subscription. Ring needs a paid Ring Home plan to save video. Verkada needs a paid license for every camera.

How many security cameras does a convenience store need?

Most small convenience stores need 4 to 8 cameras: front door, register, main aisles, cooler or high-theft shelf, stock room and back door. Add more for a parking lot or gas pumps, which often brings the total to 8 to 16.

Are wired or wireless cameras better for a business?

Wired PoE cameras are better for most businesses. One cable carries power and video, the picture doesn't drop when Wi-Fi is busy, and the recorder keeps saving video if the internet goes down.

Is it legal to record audio on store cameras?

It depends on your state. Federal law and many states allow recording if one person in the conversation consents, but some states require everyone's consent. The safest choice is to turn audio recording off unless you have checked your state's law. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I still buy Hikvision or Dahua cameras?

The FCC stopped approving new Hikvision and Dahua equipment in 2022 over national security concerns. We don't recommend buying new systems from either brand for a US business.

How long should I keep security camera footage?

Aim for at least 30 days. Theft and shrink are often found weeks later in a stock count, so a short history can miss them. Longer history needs a bigger hard drive or motion-only recording.
